yeah i think the stuff from the auto store would probably work better - its hard to slice a long length of round wire down the middle and sometimes gets a bit messy, so i might check out the trim stuff they sell for car doors and fenders, or vacuum tubing like you said cause that might work better. no matter how much dremel time i put in on the thing i can never get it to look 100% smooth so covering it usually does the trick and looks pretty good.
