Monitor Advice

Need a new monitor since my trusty 17" and 19" CRTs have decided to go 'pop'. I dare not insult the lovely piece of technology I'm using now just in case it gets offended and decides to 'pop' too!

Let's just say that 15" is small...

Been looking at all these lovely new LCDs, around 20" - size again... The only problem I'm having is deciding on the resolution. Basically, I'd like to go HD and I mean full HD (1920x1080), but keep finding screens with 1680x1050 resolutions and 720p ones.

Real questions are these, seen Samsung LCD with 1680x1050 and if I watch a 1080p film off it will 'shrink' the film or will it just fill the screen and I get a bit of the picture? And, the other way: will a 720P clip fill the full screen or will it have lovely borders?

Thanks in advance.
