The usual recommendation around here is the Linksys WRT54GL:

The Linksys routers are usually very solid. I personally use an Airlink101 AR670W that I got for $15 on Black Friday.

I usually tend to pick up cheap routers and just replace them every year or couple of years rather than spend the money on a "good" router, though before the Airlink I did use a Linksys WRT54GS for about a year.
