Wifi problem

Hopefully someone can help me...
I am running windows vista and my laptop has inbuilt wifi capabilities using an Atheros AR5007UG Wireless Network Adapter.
I have a broadband router with is a standard Livebox issued by Orange. I can connect using an ethernet cable to the Livebox, but I am having problems with wifi. Although my laptop can see the box to connect to, on pressing connect, it simply says windows cannot connect to the box.
I have tried the following:
1) having no security on the box to make sure I'm not typing in the WPA key incorrectly
2) changing the output wifi channel from 1 to 10 or 11
I am also aware that I need to ensure that the box is in pairing mode in order for it to connect.
I have my iPhone successfully connected to the Livebox, and have previously successfully connected my laptop (but not for a while, and have been "making do" with a cable connection).
When I go to ipconfig, it says that the media state of the LAN adapter wireless connection is "Media disconnected" but I'm not sure if this is relevant or not.
Any ideas gratefully received as I've spent hours trying to fix this!
