Thermal compounds is a whole 'nother argument. Diamond-based seems to be the latest. A Ford vs Chevy, Coke vs Pepsi thing. As for removing the old stuff, one can run to a 7-11 and grab a bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol and use cloth, cotton swabs or balls, preferably not paper towels since contain wood fibers and can scratch, and clean just as well.
