Sorry i didn't see this reply until now. I didn't slave the HDD. What I did was hit F8 on boot up and then selected "repair computer". I then did a system restore. This enabled everything again and I ran Malwarebytes and several on line antivirus scanners. Interestingly he came back with the same virus a few weeks later. His grand kids got from playing some sort of on line games. Don't know what ones.

Yes it was a variant of the FBI/UK virus. Apparently it only infects laptops.
