Or wait until he has enough money saved up to purchase a 2 x 4 gig kit. That would be most cost effective since your friend would not paying for shipping twice, if shipping is charged. Plus he gets a matched set as Zerk says.

In the bigger picture, it is best to wait until you have enough money put together to buy all the parts at once.
