It won't make any strange sounds. The power adapter plugs into a socket in the side of the laptop, and depending on the laptop, the socket is connected to the motherboard in various ways. Frequently, a solder joint breaks in there causing it to no longer be connected. Sometimes, all it takes is resoldering. Other times, the socket block or even the motherboard has to be replaced.
