That's probably your problem,Western Digital hard drives are different,the default setting for master if it's alone on the ribbon,no jumper should be attached,this denotes it as master.
As you're using an 80 wire udma ribbon the drive should be at the end of ribbon(black connector),blue end to motherboard and the drive jumpered to CS(cable select)
If jumpered to CS,the udma protocal is recognized and the system can take advantage of the udma 66/100,etc.
