With USB things like mice, you plug them in with the computer up and running. That is the beauty of USB. You can plug and unplug stuff with the computer running. Try plugging it in with the system running.

BTW, I have an Abit ST6 MB, and I don't have any problems using the USB ports. I have the onboard USB hooked to a 4 port hub, and have my mouse and a joystick hooked to it. I never hooked up the other USB's because I didn't need them.
