Take time to visit the website of the distribution you decide on. They sould have a compatibility list there. Of course you will have to know what is in you machine to get accurate answers. I just loaded Mandrake 8.2 on the wife's machine and found out that her sound card was not supported. I tried a couple of patches with no luck so I ended up changing the thing out (it wasn't all that great anyway).

If you've never used Linux before, I would recommend Mandrake 8.1 or 8.2. It's pretty easy to get a handle on.
