You said you got some stuff out of your old computer. Do you have the old CDROM from that machine still. If so, you might try installing it in place of the CDR to see if, by chance, your burner might be bad (I know you said it's new, but components can be brand new and still be DOA). This would weed out if it is an incompatibility between XP and your burner or if the burner is shot.
