Ok,

The reason you don't hear the modem is because the sound for it is turned down by default. When you start kppp, click on the setup, then go to the modem tab and turn up the sound. You should hear your modem then.

As for the connection, well check your dns settings, password, phone number, etc. (Don't laugh, I spent 2 days once cursing and cussing till I figured out I'd entered the wrong phone number!!). You can edit your account through the same setup as the modem volume.
Otherwise, does your isp use some funky software to access? Turning on the logging window will help you debug the problem also.

Otherwise Mandy has detected and setup the modem properly if it is dialing out.
