This is the same story told by Intel "copper-mine" CPU users of either CeleronII or PIII. It seems the force by some aftermarket cooling devices use excessive force and damage has been done.
For Intel folks, be absolutely certain that the heatsink/fan assembly is level to the CPU surface. The reduced contact area of Cu CPU`s makes this more critical. This would apply to any CPU. There only needs to be enough force to hold the heatsink/fan assembly in FULL contact. Excessive force HAS damaged beyond use a number of CPU`s.
