I am not a programmer

Good, now that that's obvious to everyone I'll start my question. I am interested in starting some basic programming but have also found that college isn't for me. I know some basic VB but not too much. I'm not sure what I want to make, but would like to play with each language a little to get a feel for everything.

Could you please give me a basic project to try or idea of what each language can do. Thanks. I will purchase Visual Studio if necessary.
