I've seen it done before. Temps drop down quite a bit since a room fan pushes way more air than a case fan can. The big draw back is having to put up with the hassle of having a room fan blowing into your case (takes up a lot of space and is noisy) and the possibility that big something can get blown into the case and cause some damage. I don't think there's any danger of the components being too cool.
