Red Hat is very well documented, and the install program is great. Here of late they've been making a push to be the next M$, so I've noticed that 6.2 is pretty bloated with worthless crap. I still run 6.1 and love it. The people I know personally who've used Linux for years tend to prefer Slackware, although I have never tried it.

If you could find a "Learn Linux" type book with Red Hat 6.1 it'd be great to start with.

There are various differences between the distros, but my considerations when first trying Linux were "how good are the reference materials that come with the distro" and "how easy is it to install and initially configure". Red Hat has always been good in those respects, although I wouldn't recommend 6.2.
