OK, I've made some progress. By going into winipcfg and selecting release all, I was able to reset the IP for the router to 192.168.1.1. First problem solved.

New problem. I don't remember the username and password. I've tried all the usual combos I use, but no luck.

Holy !@#$ I was typing in random passwords that I've used and then tried it with the default user name of root and an old password: it worked.

Thanks for everyone that read and gave this some thought. I guess sometime it pays to be persistant (I've typed in about 100 password/username combos)
