Why? Because you are trying to cram data through a hardware port that is running at 9600 bps and has no (or Xon/Xoff) flow control when your modem is trying to run it through at 40000+ and expects to see hardware flow control. Check your port settings as I indicated. Do this in Device Manager - open the properties of the com port and look on the Settings tab. You didn't have to do this with your winmodem because it used a virtual com port. If this doesn't fix it, post back and tell us the exact manufacturer and model of the modem, and what your indicated connect speed is.
