Officially there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, and 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte, and 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte. However, sometimes this is rounded off to 1000 (especially by hard drive manufacturers). A 10 "gigabyte" hard drive may only contain 10,000,000,000 bytes - which is really 9.31 gigabytes.
