i also running win98 on two pc's, i did an upgrade to ie6 quite a while ago, but i was a bug hell back then (actually pretty much everything about it was total crap). i didnt even work properly on a pc without internet. i instantly got rid of 6 and reinstalled 5.5(i found that on my office 2000 disc), works 10 times better. maybe you're having similar problems. i would wait on a second opinion though, im not familiar with ie6.
also could you be more specific on the error message,
or is 'error on page' the entire message? (i havent had that message here yet)
