Hi,

Cron is a *nix program that enables you to automagically start and stop processes in the background. Say, like doing backups, or updates, or anything else that you might want to automate.

One thing I just thought of is to check your mail program and see if it set to automatically check for new e-mail. Some of them will beep on completion.

A process manager can help you track your mystery beep down. That's a good idea.
