Your soundcard must offer a digital output -- the Dolby DTS or Dolby 5.1 (AC-3) Digital is encoded on the DVD. But DTS and AC-3 can only travel via a digital pipeline -- in either optical or coax form (most soundcards that offer a digital output have a coax miniplug).
