Let me guess - the cable modem is USB? There are no USB routers available in the US. If this is the case, get 2 wireless USB network adapters, plug them into each machine, and set them up in "ad hoc" (peer to peer) mode. Use Internet Connection Sharing to share the cable modem.

If the cable modem is plugged into an existing internal network adapter, then you can use a router - get one like the Linksys BEFW11S4 that has both switch ports and a wireless unit, plug the cable modem into it, plug it into the network adapter, and get a USB wireless network adapter for the other computer.
