On your LAN?
Just share the file thru File and Print Sharing, no reason to use a standalone server when none is required.
If you want to offer it to people outside your network, then you have a need for a server.
If it's just individual "office" type files that you need to have accessible to the outside world, an FTP server would be more secure and more suited for this application, imo.
