Local Area Connection 2 & 3 Unplugged

I just started using Windows 2000 on a laptop. And this is the first time I have ever used Windows 2000. Yesterday I installed a D-Link combination modem and network card and then installed the drivers. The dialup modem now works. I have yet to test the networking.

On the bottom right side of the task bar I now get two icons that look like a computer with a red X over each. When I run the mouse over them I get a message that says Local Area Connection 2 network cable unplugged and Local Area Connection 3 network cable unplugged. Is that normal?

So does that mean that if I am eventually successful in hooking up a network connection the red X over the icons will disappear or is that mean I have a bad or conflicting driver issue?

And am I always going to be stuck with these taskbar icons with the Red X?
