If you want to get into LANs, then A+ or Net+ will get your foot in the door. Don't expect great things as far as pay.

If you're thinking of WANs (Cisco, Nortel, etc), then the certs won't do you a lot of good. You'll need to get experience. Not many companies willing to let a "paper" cert person mess w/ their WAN. You could get lucky, but you can't count on luck.

Best bet is to try to get into a company where there's opportunity to grow into it. For example, a company where you can get in as a basic/junior Network tech and have a Senior Engineer as a mentor or coworker.
