With a router you only need one IP address from your ISP. The router in turn assigns IP addresses to each connected PC. A switch requires a IP address for each PC connected to it. If your ISP charges for additional IP addresses then a router makes sense.
Home networks are no harder to set up using a router than a switch. They both perform the same function.
