You could have caused a power spike and damaged the controller circuit. GO to the manufactures site and download/run the diagnostic software and run it. If the drive is still under warranty you can the get a replacement.
Also never work inside the case when the computer is on. First of all it is possible to knock something loose as you have found. And Second there isn't a damn thing that you can or should install adjust or remove while the computer is running.
You are just asking for trouble trying to shortcut time by not shutting down first.
