What era?

I liked Panzer Commander, WWII era might be hard to find these days though. edit found it for 10 bucks here

Steel Panthers can be had for free from matrix games and goes through WWII to modern times, but it is not pure tank game and is a large download.

The combat mission games from Battlefront.com are another WWII series that are good, but not pure tank either.

There were some good modern tank games based on the M-1, but I'd have to defer judgement on them to others
