I have a 256 meg ramdisk, on XP, with 1 gig of RAM.
I stick all sorts of things in it. Software installs, temp, temp internet, and also use it as a virtual DVD and SVCD.
No noticable slowdowns, and is usually much faster at most things than the hard drive.
