With power supplies, the amount of watts isn't as important as the quality of the power going to the system. A cheap power supply won't be able to send clean, stable power to the system...the power will more than likely fluctuate or ripple and it's this "dirty" power that causes stability problems. A good quality power supply will send "clean" or very steady power to the system and this helps with stability.

So basically, a good quality 300 watt PSU more often than not will outperform a poor quality 600 watt PSU.
