i disagree, during WOII (as well as during WO1) nobody could make better steel than the German industry. the quality was vastly superior to anything anyone else had.
the us came from a isolationist politic, and did not have much experience in building modern (for that day) weapons; the modern weapons they had where developed for the arms trade with the British (the P51 mustang was originally an order by the RAF), and being an island the British where not really interested in tanks.
the one thing the US had that the Germans did not have(in equal amounts) was capacity. the USA is a big country, so it can produce lage amounts of the thing they want to produce.
the victory of numbers over quality, that the Sherman vs. tiger struggle was, has to be seen in light of those facts as a deliberate and successful strategy.
yes i know it's not nice/honourable, to send 8 men , knowing the big strong guy can never kill them all, but it works almost every time, and in real war that's very important (you can't go back to a saved game

)
in answer to the original question; a successful and realistic tank simulator is very hard to do, because a tank has a crew, not just a driver, and you can do only one job at a time. i know a tank game looks cool (you can blow stuff up) but that get's boring really fast, you need someone else in a tank, or with anti tank weaponry, and a tank on it's own has almost no defence against modern anti-tank weaponry (think for instance about the A10)
IMHO the only really fun games that involve tanks are strategy games (maybe mompg, i don't know haven't really played much of those yet)
ps. i don’t have time right now to do proper research and document all i said , but some of you know me personally, and those that do, can vouch for my knowledge on Both World war's
