Is the VIA AUDIO (Wave) selected in the Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio/Playback as well in the RECORDING Options?
Try going to ADVANCE PROPERTIES/Audio and try moving those slides if they do really move? You could always show the Volume Control on your Task Bar by puting a check mark on the Check box. Then try plugging the speakers jacks firmly at the back of your Comp or better yet check all your connections.
