The heads of a VHS recorder are capable of recording over 500 lines of resolution - PERIOD. The recording heads in a $50 no-name VCR are the same as the heads in a $2000 broadcast quality S-Video deck.

But the recording heads can only record what is fed into them - and that is either composite video or f-type coax. Composite has 220 lines, coax only 175. So...it's the source that is bad, not VHS.
