When making an LCD everything has to be extremely precise. Each pixel is controlled by a transistor. There are thousands in one screen. If one is bad you will have a dead pixel. LCD's are expensive because of the complexity of the technology. It takes very strict quality control to produce LCD's. Many of them are thrown out at the factory because they have too many dead pixels. That brings up the cost as well.
