Well, I can't imagine that it's really the port itself is damaged. I've never seen a port damage so far. Well, nevertheless it can happen.
So first of all try that other printer. If it still doesn't work, check the BIOS settings for it.
How old is that printer ? If it's not that old, there's the possibility that it has USB. In this case hook the printer to the USB and forget the LPT.
