Do you have connection lights to show activity on the router?
Lights indicating connection when the one is on and the old is off?
Sounds like the machine failing has a gateway problem. And my first gut inclination would be to tear the networking out (OS wise), take the system through a cold boot, and let it reinstall the network stuff. You may have already done it.
