my guess is that the LCD that shows this reading takes the current flow from the battery to the LCD strip and measures it...therefore the reading is the current status of the battery charge...(pretty smart thing to do, nothing like reaching into your bag and pulling out a discharged battery to replace another discharged battery in the middle of a 7 hour flight)
