I've just started using Thunderbird also.
In Tools, I've set it to make all mail not from someone in my address book, junk mail. When I open Thunderbird, I'll notice mail in the Junk Folder, I'll delete it to the Trash and then empty the Trash.
I haven't done anything with the filters cause I don't know how. I would have to see a sample as to what a person enters there.
