If you plan on doing heavy overclocking get the prescott as long as you have good cooling and a good heat sink and fan. If you plan on doing slight to moderate overclocking you'd be fine with the northwood.
As for the cache you'll have to wait for somebody else to answer that, I'm not exactly sure what it is either.
