Boot problems... HDD screwed??

OK, here's the bind:
I have a 60GB Maxtor drive, been with me for 2.5 years now, with no real problems. Then, all of a sudden it started getting system32.exe errors popping up and stopping the computer booting first time, unfortunately it was at home and my parents only told me when I got home.
So, what I tried to do was a repair installation of Windows XP, but that didn't work. A day or two later the computer wouldn't boot at all...

What happens:
I power up, it runs the diagnostic on the video card and says it's fine, then hangs up with the Windows icon on the front and won't start. The computer works fine with other HDD (I'm currently using an older 40GB). When I went to repair Windows on the partition, it wouldn't work. Then I clicked the option to setup Windows on it, and it showed the other two partitions as still having what was originally on them, but showed my C partition as being completely unused (ie wiped). Then every time I try to slave the 60GB to this 40GB, it won't start. Should I try installing Windows on the 60GB again, or what??

TIA, this one doesn't sound pleasant
