Being a TA (considered faculty) at Fresno St I got Windows XP for $5 and the same for Office XP. $10 for an operating system and Office is not bad.

Their are subsitutes for Word and Powerpoint, but for a common user Word and Powerpoint are the easiest to use. $160 for Office is not a bad deal considering it is great software.
