DVD-ROM Driver Problem

Okay, I have a HP desktop with XP Home loaded. The DVD-ROM drive is flagged in DM with the error "Windows cannot load the driver for this device. The driver is either corrupted or missing", or something to that end. Now, I remove it from DM and reboot, but I get the same message when it tries to install it again. It is recognized upon bootup, so I don't think the drive is faulty. What gives? Could the default Windows driver be corrupted?
