Question IBM ThinkPad Password Problem

One of my inlaws acquired an IBM 2620 ThinkPad laptop at a church rummage sale. No documentation, no system disks, no nothing came with it. We don't even know what OS is installed.
The system boot routine requires a password in order to log into the laptop. We can't get into DOS or any Windows Safe Mode without knowing the BIOS password.
Since we don't know what it is, and there is no way to find out, does anyone know of a way to get around the password requirement?
