I have a working modded xbox and its... AWESOME! You can run Linux on it, (and though I'm not advocating it) copy games and DVD's to your hard drive, run emulators, and a whole bunch of other goodies.
I'm not familiar with soldering so I didn't dare do it on my own. If you're not an expert I recommend a website called BMMODS.com. They have very reasonable prices and will even install a bigger hard drive and include a disc with the hacked BIOS on it. You pay them through PAYPAL and then ship your xbox to them. They'll return it in about 2 weeks.
I highly recommend doing this.
