ENUM and Over the Top Install Problem
Using Win98 SE
I forgot to remove the ENUM file when I changed MOBs, so after putting in the new board I booted to Safe Mode and removed ENUM. I expected the machine to search for new hardware, then I would load the new MOB disk. BUT, when it restarted, I got the message “ Windows Expanded Memory Diver EMM 386 not installed- unable to set page frame base address " Then it loaded EMM 386 , but stopped again saying “ cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Window application .
The Windows Registry or System.ini file refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists. “ Then it says to try uninstalling the program or re installing with the disk.
C:\program~1\Symantec\Symantec\Symevnt.386.
Then same message for: SYMTDI.vxd
C:\program~1\Norton~2\Norton~2\NAVAP.vxd
I went back into Safe Mode and uninstalled Norton System Works, and searched for Norton files and Symantec file and removed them.
I removed the Registry files associated with Symantec and rebooted. Same result.
I decided to do an over the top install of Win 98 to fix it , but when it rebooted it restored the Registry to an earlier time, and the ENUM drivers and registry entries were all back. I tried again, same result. I can only get into Safe Mode and can not even re install Norton to humor the system. Question: how can I do an over the top install or fix this problem without doing a clean install and losing my neighbor’s data and programs ??
