samba running on Linux/BSD/Unix can act as a logon server....it may take some time reading the faqs, but it could be worth it in the end.

my only other suggestion would be to pick up a copy of NT 3.1-3.51 server for about $20 and use it....wouldn't be as sweet, but if you don't want to put much time into it, that would be the easy route.

the benefit of having a Linux/BSD/Unix + Samba box running as the domain controller is that you could use it to serve as a NIS server and control your *nix and NT user accounts from a single location, as well as providing an NFS to SMB(and vice versa) gateway for maximum interoperability.
