KA,

I appreciate the help. Searching the backgrounds yielded nothing out
of the ordinary but doing a search using keyword "wallpaper" exposed
the culprit. Saving a jpeg as wallpaper had created a bitmap image that
was appearing as described in my original post. It's appleal was limited
to a little less than half the population and had to go.
