Upgrading from 98 to XP is iffy at best and I don't recommend it. As for a clean install being for advanced users, don't worry about it... it pretty much takes you by the hand and walks you through it. Just set your BIOS to boot from CD first... drop your CD in and when your machine boots, you will see a msg to press any key to boot from CD... do that and follow the instructions on screen. When prompted to format, format using NTFS... then again... just do what it asks you to do.

Before you start though, what are the specs of your machine?
